Utricularia sandersonii, often nicknamed the “fairy bog” or “bunny ears” plant, is a delightful terrestrial carnivorous species native to South Africa. It forms a low-growing mat of tiny, bright green leaves, while its real activity happens below the surface where minute bladder traps capture microscopic organisms in the moist substrate. Its true charm appears when in flower, producing small white blooms with a distinctive lower lip that resembles little ears, giving the plant a playful and eye-catching character.

This species is naturally occurring and not a hybrid, so it has no parental lineage. It belongs to the Utricularia genus, renowned for its unique suction traps and wide diversity of growth forms.

Utricularia sandersonii is easy to grow and flowers readily under the right conditions. It prefers bright, indirect light and a consistently moist to wet environment. A loose, nutrient-poor mix such as sphagnum moss with perlite works well. Always use rainwater or distilled water, and avoid letting the substrate dry out. It enjoys warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity, making it ideal for terrariums, windowsills, or as a charming addition to any carnivorous plant collection.
